As I dance around the internet, looking for resources on how best to effectively teach my students Latin meter and poetry, I came across this website at the suggestion of Lance Piantaggini – Hexameter.co.
The videos I am referring here seemed to be voiced by the same person who did the Latin Tutorial channel on YouTube – those are some very good references for helping students with grammatical explanation.
Start by going to Hexameter.co’s Rules for Scansion page. There are two videos there (I will avoid embedding them here so that they can get the referral they deserve!) that offer great overviews for students.
Although this is a grammatically-based educational system, it serves as a solid starting point for those of us trying to make the transition but also re-familiarizing with the rules of scansion and poetry. I am going to try to find a happy medium, combining Piantagnini’s method with traditionaly scansion rules to create a system where students can get familiar through using the language.
