Somerset Academy Making Use of Romae’s Online Tools

September 1, 2010 in Latin Programs

We are kicking off our 2nd year of Latin at Somerset Academy and we now have a very strong foundation forming. We have expanded to Latin II this year, drawing from last year’s first ever Latin I class. We have also added an extra class of Latin I this year – both classes having 38 students enrolled in each! So, we have a huge turnout for Latin this year.

We have also restructured our middle school program to be M/J Latin Beginning. This means students on this middle school track could take Latin this year and M/J Latin Intermediate next year and enter into high school with Latin I credit already out of the way!

In order to better serve our students, we are making use of Romae’s online tools. We have added web sites for each course:

We are also adding groups on Romae for each class so that students can get extra help and better communicate with one another. We are also anticipating using the online format to elicit more colloquia Latine! Students are already apt to communicate online via a social network, and this can only enhance their learning outside of the classroom. (At this time, we are delaying enrolling our middle school students just as a precaution and also because we are using a different set of texts this year).

Salvete! Romae Kicks Off New Social Network

August 26, 2010 in Site Announcements

In order to offer more features to our members and to take the site to the next level, we have completed installing our social network for Romae.org!

We named it amicitia for obvious reasons and we hope that the network grows stronger over time and will offer a means for communication between teachers, students, scholars, and other supporters of classical studies. So, how does it work?

First, start by creating a profile. You can do this by signing up the old fashioned way, or by simply signing up using your Facebook account (coming soon). You can personalize your profile, just like on other social networking sites.

Next, either start a group or find one that you are interested in. Simply peruse the group listing in the Groups section on the navigation menu at the top of the page. Not all groups are open to the public – some have private memberships and others are hidden altogether! In fact, if you create a group, you have those basic levels of privacy as well.

Finally, connect! There are others online and the numbers are growing everyday. Find old friends or make new ones. Send messages to each other. Set up events. There are many ways to connect – so get involved!

We are looking forward to the growth of the network so that we can all get involved in what we are passionate about. Make friends, collaborate on projects!
